Several years back, we created Kai’s Journey, a trilogy of children’s books to help families cope with grief.
But grief is a lifelong process. We needed this resource to grow with our audience.
So we wrote a new chapter for Kai, this time, as a middle schooler. Naturally, we called it, “Lost in the Middle.”
We launched at NY Comic Con, building a classroom ripped straight from our story.
With the help of Will Reeve, son of Superman actor Christopher Reeve, we put grief support center stage at the event.
Animated trailer for “Lost in the Middle.”
Final cast of characters. We worked with clinical psychologists to ensure each one had a unique and authentic experience with loss.
200 pages worth of narration, dialogue, text exchanges, dream sequences, flashbacks, social media posts, and of course, illustrations.
Our manuscript was the most intensely organized Google Doc I’ve ever been a part of.
Illustrator Genie Espinosa helped bring the project to life.
Together, we got from the manuscript below to the extremely satisfying and cathartic printing stage.
Throughout the book, QR codes let kids scan to receive videos directly from our characters.
Now the story’s on your phone! I knew it was working when my nieces kept asking to borrow mine.
Stills from Comic Con.
Writer’s Room BTS… many stinky jam sessions spent in that little room on the right.
